The Southmead Hospital PPP aims to provide a modern acute hospital which will provide efficient, high quality, specialist care. Concentrating acute services onto a single site was designed to avoid unnecessary duplication and to enable clinicians to make rapid and effective decisions in consultation with colleagues, to ensure the best possible care. Community facilities – including rehabilitation beds, outpatients, minor injury care and diagnostic facilities – are also integrated at Southmead.
The hospital and the surrounding site has an area of around 115,000m2, and consists of 800 acute beds (75% of which are single rooms with en-suite bathroom facilities), 24 theatre suites, and a new Accident & Emergency department. The hospital also provides leading neuroscience and surgery services, major trauma care, plastic and burns surgery, renal services and Orthopaedics.
Better Alignment, Better Value, Better Governance
Southmead Hospital is designed to be the most sustainable modern acute hospital in the UK, with the highest rating in terms of environmental impact assessment and a carbon footprint well below the UK requirements, providing better value to those that it serves, and the local community.
